Where can I register?

You can register at www.nwchessreg.com/state2017.  If you have any concerns, please email rick.jorgensen@gmail.com

What is this about Pairings being sent to my Smartphone?

Yep. Better that last year.  We will have an email or a text message directly to your phone before the round starts of JUST YOUR PLAYER. To participate, when you sign up on the web site, you have 2 choices. either enter the email address you want the notice sent to OR give us your phone number and CARRIER (Sprint, Verizon, ATT all have different ways we need to send to them) and it will be delivered as a text message to your phone. Each time we finish the pairings, we will send a custom text to that phone.

Cool, How can I tell you the number to use to send texts?

When you sign up for the event, there is a box that you can fill out. If you have previously registered (or want to change the phone number we use), just send an email to Ben Raidan at ben@nwchessreg.com.He will take care of it for you. If you want to know what’s on file, just send him an email and he will let you know.

If you are at the tournament and want to change the number (or participate), go to the INFO DESK and fill out a little card. We will do our best to get it in the next round (no promises but since we want to make sure the rounds go off on time but we will do our best).

We will STILL have the paper copies published on the walls like before.

How do I order a Team Table?

We have it all take care of for you. This year, they are all FREE. After running this for a couple of years, we see that folks tend to need about 2 extra seats for each player so that is what we are planning for. This isn’t a hard and fast guarantee but when we rand the same event in 2011 with over 1200 players, there were seats to spare. We will do everything we can to make sure you have enough seats available without all the hassle.

How can I make sure I can sit with my Team?

We will group everyone from the same school together and then will group schools in the same general area together. We’ll do this based on the entries we get by April 10th.

I have Friends from other schools! How can I sit with them?

We thought of that too! We will be grouping schools that are close to each other geographically together.

We are the only family from our school coming. Do we get our own table?

Seriously? What fun would THAT be? You don’t want to sit with yourself do you? We will group several smaller schools together at the same table “Family Style” so you have someone new to talk to.

The team next to me is hogging all the chairs!

Since no one is “buying a table”, we ask that you not consider it “yours” – rather, you are part of a community focused on having a good time with your kids. We do our best to provide reasonable space for everyone and make the best assignments we can based on our experience. We’re not perfect and there will be some times that some folks need a little extra space and others, not so much. We ask that you treat this like the community it is and work things out in a friendly manner. If you can’t please find me (Rick Jorgensen) or James Stripes (a former organizer at the event helping) or Shila MacDonald (yet another former Organizer) at the info desk. We will do our very best to make the best accommodations as we can. Let’s try to set the same example that we try to teach our kids. After all, it’s not just Chess we are teaching, its how to deal with life :-)

But I have a ton of relatives coming to see my child play? What am I going to do?

We’ve seen this happen a couple times over the years. Usually, folks are pretty friendly and there is extra room most of the time and people are more than willing to provide a little extra space for a relative. If it’s really difficult, come to our “INFO DESK” for some extra help. We will have “overflow seating” available and can usually make some accommodations.

How can I find my Table?

Each Table will have a number (we have almost 300 tables!). We’ll assign a school to a table number and then post it on the web site (along with a handy map of the site that you can print out and take with you). Check the Web Site a couple days before the tournament and look up your School. The Assigned Table numbers will be next to the school name.

What if I don’t like where you assigned me?

Please feel free to work things out amongst yourselves. Nothing is exact and we expect that folks will need to shuffle around a little. Please remember that there are fire codes so please don’t bring your own chairs or block a walkway. Please use common sense and, if asked by security to move, please do so knowing that we just want everyone to be safe and have a good time.

What about FOOD? Can I Preorder Lunch?

Again, making it simple. We have a ton of locations around the area for “Grab and Go” and several places to pick up Pizza. We will have a special line during the day so that you can buy your food early, get a ticket and just pick it up (so you spend less time waiting in line).

Can I bring my own food?

Sadly, unless you have a specific medical condition. No. This is strictly enforced. We offered the coaches a site where you COULD bring your own food but it was rejected. We are also having FIXED ROUNDS so you will ALWAYS know when the next round starts. If you want your own food, you can leave the building and know that the exactly when you need to be back to play the next round. The convention center is very strict about this so please, do not ask for an exception – They check at the door. We are trying to do our best to offer a number of options for everyone.

OK -The IMPORTANT PART ….. Tell me about the trophies

You’re gonna LOVE this. First – EVERYONE that qualified for State gets one. Next, this year, we are streamlining things to try to get you out the door as fas as possible after the last round.  In most cases – right after your child finishes playing their last round.

Where do I get my child's trophy?

When your child goes to record their last game, we’ll look at the number of points they have (including the last round) and if they have 3.5 points or less, they will get their trophy right then and there! No line to stand in or anywhere else to go. TA DA!

If your child gets 4 points or more, they get a really BIG Trophy and we call them up on the stage after a short time so we can let folks know what place they got in there grade level. The size of the trophy depends on the number of points they earn (all players with 4 points will get the same size 4.5 and 5 point winners will get larger ones.)

I heard that the trophies will be 4 feet tall this year - is that REALLY TRUE?

Yep – We’re breaking the bank this year and if a player is undefeated, the trophy may be bigger than THEY are.

What about Team Trophies?

We have those as well only this year, they will be Plaques ( Easier to put in your school trophy case). The top 25 teams in Grade 1-3 and the top teams in grade 4-6 will get an award. We will announce the top 5 teams from each section from the stage. All other teams my pick up their award at the side of the stage.

What Time do I need to be there?

Your child must BE IN THEIR SEAT and READY TO PLAY no later than 8:45am, Saturday Morning. At that time, we start to move unpaired players around and get the event started. Players with our partners will get new ones. It’s REALLY IMPORTANT that you are there on time.

Second – if you are running late, drive up the street a block or two and then have one parent walk down the street to the Convention Center while you park the car. As tempting as it may be at the moment, please don’t just drop them off in the middle of the street!

When they come in, go STRAIGHT to the 5th floor at the entrance of the playing room if they are in Grades 1-6 and let your child enter the room. You can’t go with them past that point. Someone will make sure they get where they need to be. If your child is in Kindergarten, go to the Kinder room on the 2nd floor. You CAN help them to their seat in that room. For Middle School players, go to the 4th floor, ever the room and begin. Your game has already started.

I'm running LATE! What do I do??

First – leave early! (or get a hotel room in Tacoma on Friday night and relax!). Remember – there are over 4000 people coming within about an hour so traffic will be difficult to navigate. As an added bonus, we are giving away free drip coffee to ease you into the day to come.

When does the next round start?

All rounds will be on a fixed schedule and we will not start them free to leave the building and early. If we are running LATE, we will make an announcement and shift the entire schedule later. You’re free to relax, leave the building, take a walk, whatever, just be back for the next round!

DoI need to checkin?

Nope – not at all. All you have to do is MAKE SURE YOU GET THERE ON TIME!  The pairings will be up and available no later than 7:30am. All players must be in their seats and ready to play no later than 8:45am. Anyone not in their seat and ready to play at that time will forfeit their first round so we can pair “no shows” with other players. This will be strictly enforced. Please, Do not be late!

What is "bughouse"? Can I enter that?

Bughouse is a variation of chess that has 2 players as a team, playing against another team with 5-10 minute games. It’s a tradition at State to play it Friday Night before the event. Come to the Main Playing space (on the 5th floor) no later than 6pm Friday, April 28th and join the fun! Registration is at www.nwchessreg.com/bughousestate2017

I heard that I need to being a clock - what’s with that?

All MIDDLE SCHOOL and players in Grade 4-6 with perfect scores in the last round are required to use their own clock in order to play. Vendors are available on site to sell clocks if one is needed. Players in 4-6 are encouraged to use a clock for all their rounds.

I still have questions! Can I talk to someone?

Before the event, you can email rick.jorgensen@gmail.com  As of Friday morning, at noon, we will be at the convention center setting up and will not have access easily. Please feel free to come to the Tacoma Convention Center after noon and go to the info desk.
